We provide high-quality training for certified educators and therapists dedicated to supporting students with dyslexia. In collaboration with the curriculum of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia & Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children, our training programs offer evidence-based strategies to help struggling readers succeed. Rite Flight: A Classroom Reading Rate Program + A Classroom Comprehension Program

Overview:
The Rite Flight: Classroom Reading Rate and Comprehension Programs are half day, research-based trainings developed by Scottish Rite for Children. They are ideal for educators, specialists, and parents seeking effective strategies to support students with dyslexia.
Each training may be taken individuallor together on the same day at a discounted rate. These programs are especially helpful for homeschooling families looking to implement structured, evidence-based reading support.
After registering, participants will receive an email with instructions for ordering the required materials through the Scottish Rite for Children online portal. New users will be prompted to create an account before purchasing.

Rite Flight: A Classroom Reading Rate Program

Description: Reading fluency is one of the essential pillars of literacy instruction, as identified by the National Reading Panel. Students who lack fluency often read in a halting, disconnected manner, diminishing comprehension and leading to reading avoidance.
The Rite Flight: Classroom Reading Rate Program is designed to strengthen reading fluency for students in grades 1 – 8. It can be used individually, in small groups, or in classroom settings as a supplemental or intervention tool. This program is ideal for classroom teachers, reading specialists, and special education professionals, and integrates seamlessly with any core reading curriculum.

Description: Reading comprehension is the ultimate goal of literacy instruction. The Rite Flight: Classroom Comprehension Program offers explicit instruction in comprehension strategies, supported by
modeling, guided practice, and feedback. Designed for students in grades 1 – 8, this program
addresses:
  • Difficulties with fluent and accurate word recognition
  • Limited vocabulary or background knowledge
  • Weaknesses in higher-order language skills
  • Challenges with using text structure effectively
  • Inability to apply metacognitive strategies during reading

BUILD: A K-1 Early Reading Intervention Training

Overview: BUILD: A K–1 Early Reading Intervention is a 100-lesson, small-group curriculum developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia & Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children. It is designed to support kindergarten and first-grade students identified as at risk for dyslexia or experiencing early reading difficulties.
The curriculum addresses five key components of effective reading instruction: alphabet, letter-sound knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension. Each is taught using a direct, systematic, cumulative, and multisensory approach.
This one-day professional training equips educators and specialists with the knowledge and tools to deliver early intervention that meets the developmental needs of struggling readers. It is ideal for:
  • Interventionists
  • Special education teachers
  • Dyslexia therapists (CALT, LDT, and trainees)
  • Early childhood educators
  • Homeschooling parents

Dyslexia Therapist Program

Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia

In-person
Dates: Introductory Course, June 8 – 26, 2026
Time: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday
Training Location: Dyslexia School of Houston Training Center and Lab School, 9409 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024 (next to Southwells Grill)
Overview: Become a Certified Take Flight Dyslexia Therapist through Dyslexia School of Houston’s immersive two-year training program. Designed for certified teachers, this research-based course prepares educators to deliver structured, multisensory instruction to students with dyslexia.
The Take Flight curriculum, developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia & Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children, is a proven intervention designed for students ages 7 and older. It builds upon decades of success in dyslexia remediation and aligns with the five essential components of reading identified by the National Reading Panel.
Our Dyslexia Therapist Training Program meets the requirements for Texas licensure, and meets the criteria for membership in the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).
Dyslexia School of Houston adheres to the high professional and ethical standards established by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC). Therapist certification is conferred by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).

General Program Information

The course offers training in:
  • Educational identification of dyslexia
  • Characteristics of dyslexia
  • Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia, a multisensory, structured approach to teaching:
    • Phonemic Awareness
    • Phonics
    • Vocabulary
    • Fluency
    • Comprehension Skills
    • Spelling
    • Handwriting
  • Classroom strategies and techniques used for students with dyslexia
  • Conducting parent and teacher information seminars
Eligible candidates must meet the following qualifications:
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education or a related field
  • Hold a valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Have support from their school 
  • Be able to have 3 groups of students 4 or 5 days a week for 2 years (1 student can be considered “a group”)

Step by Step: Getting Started

Step 1 Complete our online application. Once you have reviewed all training requirements, please submit your application and sign the acknowledgement form.
Step 2 Provide the following, email to therapist.training@dyslexiahouston.org:
  • One letter of recommendation
  • Official transcripts (College or Graduate School)
  • Signed School Support Form (if you are working in a school)
  • A recent photo/headshot
Step 3 Attend interview with our Qualified Instructor(s). You will receive an email to schedule your interview, either in person or virtual.
Step 4 Confirmation and payment. You will receive confirmation of your acceptance into the training program via email with instructions on how to pay the training fee.
Step 5Attend orientation and order required materials. We will host a group orientation where you will learn more about what is expected of the program and how to order the required materials (Take Flight Year 1 Kit) from the Scottish Rite for Children website. New users will need to request an account to complete their purchase. 
If your registration fee and materials are being covered by a school purchase order, please notify our team accordingly. Please make sure the training fee is a separate P.O. from the materials cost.
