Texans want lawmakers to fund dyslexia help for students | Opinion

The 2023 Beckley Wilson Act was a landmark moment for Texas children with dyslexia, requiring public schools to screen students for dyslexia and to provide comprehensive special education plans for those students. Yet what the Beckley Wilson Act did not do was allocate additional funding for these new costs, which are now shouldered by the state’s independent school districts.

This comes as the number of students with dyslexia has increased by 100,000 and as students with dyslexia have been moved under the special education umbrella in Texas.

Meet the Madison Peddle had trouble reading in early childhood, and by the time she reached fourth grade, it was causing even bigger problems. 

Her father watched with heartbreak as his little girl, who was diagnosed with dyslexia, erupted in outbursts after school, failed to finish homework and lost her sunny spirit. 

“We were at a point where we were falling apart,” said Paul Peddle, a West University Place resident.
