Follow our reporting on the dyslexia crisis in Texas schools
Through an occasional series this spring, the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News are exploring how dyslexia is identified and remediated in Texas public schools. This comes as the number of students with dyslexia has increased by 100,000 and as students with dyslexia have been moved under the special education umbrella in Texas.

After over 27 years as an educator in HISD, I witnessed firsthand how broken our public school systems are when it came to providing support to students with learning challenges, especially dyslexia.

For 28 years, Rotary Club of West U has hosted its annual charity golf tournament which supports a chosen beneficiary in the Houston area. This year’s tournament will support The Code Academy-Dyslexia School of Houston in its mission to provide access to world-class dyslexia intervention support to all students, regardless of their financial background.


Meet the Houstonian who started a dyslexia school in her garage
Meet the Madison Peddle had trouble reading in early childhood, and by the time she reached fourth grade, it was causing even bigger problems.
Her father watched with heartbreak as his little girl, who was diagnosed with dyslexia, erupted in outbursts after school, failed to finish homework and lost her sunny spirit.
“We were at a point where we were falling apart,” said Paul Peddle, a West University Place resident.
Innovation in education: The Code Academy amplifies dyslexia awareness, support
In recognition of Dyslexia Awareness Month, The Code Academy is emphasizing its mission to raise awareness and understanding of dyslexia. By nurturing support and advocating for donations, The Code Academy strives to ensure students with learning challenges at the Dyslexia School of Houston can embrace their full potential and become literate. Tammy Spencer, known as the “Dyslexia Lady of Houston ISD”, launched the Dyslexia School of Houston and its sister non-profit The Code Academy in 2020, and are committed to eliminating financial barriers for essential intervention services for dyslexics.
